The Means and The Ends
Filed Under Photography | Leave a Comment

Love forever love is free/ Let's turn forever you and me/ Windmill, windmill for the land/ Is everybody in? (Gorillaz - "Windmill Song")
I went past this windmill on numerous occasions. On my way to school, on my way back from school, going for walks or on my morning jogs. However, only in this picture does the profoundness of its solitude really manage to impress me. Only now does this old lonely windmill drive her message home. People cross the bridge, coming and going places. Maybe they sometimes gaze at the clock by the bridge and wish they could go faster so they could arrive on time. They seldom don’t even take notice of its spinning arms, don’t bother looking. I know I often times didn’t. And yet it was there. The bridge and the windmill were always my “means” of getting to different places. Always the means, never the ends of my action. And that just makes me think of how many “lonely windmills” we may all be missing every day…

Johnny Was Here

Johnny Bravo lives on Hugo de Grootstraat no.7
I always asked myself where all the cartoon characters of my childhood wound up… Now I know that some of them decided to reside in the same type of campus rooms that I used to live in. And one of them actually chose the very same city…
A campus room is a student’s low-scale universe. When you are thousands of kilometers away from everything you call your own, your room becomes the shrine of everything you are and everything that means something to you. My campus rooms spoke volumes about me and, looking at pictures taken inside them, I like to think that I’m contemplating part of my personality. This is why this window has a unique personality as well and, out there, there’s someone that this exact personality stemmed from…

Open-Ended Invitation
Filed Under Photography | Leave a Comment

“It would have been better to come back at the same time of the day. If you come at four in the afternoon, when three o’clock strikes I shall begin to feel happy. The closer our time approaches, the happier I shall feel. By four o’clock I shall already be getting agitated and worried; I shall be discovering that happiness has its price! But if you show up at any odd time, I’ll never know when to start dressing my heart for you. We all need rituals” (Antoine de Saint Exupery - The Little Prince).
As narrow as our life scope may be, we are all awaiting something. Every person carries with him or her hundreds and thousands of “welcome”s, of “please sit down”s, of “can I see you again”s, of “I love you”s, but are in too many cases too shy or too scared to whisper, let alone spell them out. If science would evolve to the point where it would be possible to take pictures of the inside of our very hearts, I know that for so many of us out there, this is how it would look like…

The Inner Breadth of Narrow Things

Does the narrowness of our surroundings confine us to a narrow view of the world? After contemplating the grandeur of small things in Holland, my answer is a definite NO.
